Women's Christian College
In the era of rapid technological development, universities of arts and sciences have their place. Women's Christian College, Nagercoil, a renowned institution of higher learning, has continuously transformed the lives of thousands of female students. Located in the heart of Nagercoil city, the green campus attracts thousands of students from every corner of the region. Besides imparting knowledge, the college plays an important role in instilling the Christian values of love and charity in young students.
This prestigious institution for the development of oppressed women in the Kanyakumari region has a long tradition dating back to the early 18th century during the reign of Maharani Rani Gowri Parvathi Bai of Travancore. It is the campus where a pioneering educational institution was established in the princely state of Travancore. Rev. Charles Mead, the father of the South Travancore Mission, came to Travancore in 1818. He made Colonel Munro's tourist bungalow (the site where the present chapel stands) his mission headquarters. In October 1819, he founded the Mission Seminary, which became the first educational institution in Travancore. Mr Mead wrote the following from his Congregational Seminary in England: "We hope it will rise in time for a Missionary College in Southern India." His words came true in February 1893 when the seminary was raised into a second-class college called "Nagercoil Christian College" affiliated with the University of Madras. At that time, 13 students enrolled (7 Christians and 6 non-Christians). A new two-story building (now Chemistry-Zoology) was built in 1889 with a donation from Septimus Scott. The college was later named Scott Christian College after him. The main block was built in 19
0. In 1970, Scott Christian College was shifted to a new campus on Kottar-Parvathipuram Road.
