Presidency College
Presidency College is an art, business, and science college in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. On 16 October 18 0, the school was established as the Madras Preschool before being converted into a high school and then a postgraduate school. Presidency University is one of the oldest government art schools in India. It is one of the two Presidency Colleges established by the British in India, the other being the Presidency College, Kolkata. In 1826 Sir Thomas Munro requested the establishment of a Commission of Public Instruction. In 1836, the duties of the commission were transferred to the "Native Education Commission". The plans drawn up by the commission were not to the liking of the Governor of Madras, Lord Elphinstone, who proposed nineteen resolutions, which were unanimously adopted. mail He arrived in Mumbai (Bombay) on 20 September 1840 but did not reach Chennai (Madras) until 24 November. In the meantime, the committee invited Cooper from Hoogly College, Kolkata, to temporarily perform principal duties at Rs 400 per month. Cooper accepted the invitation and came to Chennai (Madras). On 16 October 1840, he and his staff opened the Presidency School, a preschool known as Edinburgh's home, at Egmore. Cooper only stayed in high school for a few months. Shortly after Powell's arrival and before the opening of the high school section on 12 April 1841, he returned to Calcutta. The prep school moved to Popham Broadway in 1841. The school became Presidency College. When the University of Madras was established in 1857, the Presidency College was merged with it. In 1870, the college moved to its present location at Kamaraj Salai opposite Marina Beach.
