Mrs. A.V.N. The college has the unique distinction of being one of the few select colleges that excels in serving the educational and cultural needs of South India and Andhra Pradesh in particular. Very few higher education institutions in our country can boast richer and more diverse alumni than this 1 0-year-old institution. The first and main Nobel laureate, Sir C.V. Raman passed away from this institution. The bronze bust of Sir C.V.Raman was installed on th April 1991 and was inaugurated by former Chief Secretary Sri V.P.Rama Rao, IAS.
Other meritorious students included Sonthi Ramamurthy, ICS, Sri B.S. Sarma, Viceroy's Executive Committee Member in the 20s, Sri Vepa Ramesam, Supreme Court Judge, Madras, Padma Bhushan Dwaram Venkata Swami Naidu, Sri Tenneti Viswanadham, Professor. B. Rama Chandra Rao, Former Vice Chairman, UGC, Sri S.V. Rangarow, Alluri Seetharama Raju, Dr. M. Gopala Krishna Reddy, Former Vice Chancellor, Andhra University, Padma Vibhushan Prof. C. R. Rao.
Established as a school in 1860, this superior institution grew with the support of the public, especially the zamindars of the time. It received the status of a High School in 1886 with Mr. E. Winckler, a European Headmaster, who became the principal in 1878 when it was raised to the status of a College under the name Hindu College. Other followers of his were Messers H.H. Anderson, R.S. Sheppard, W. Ramaiah, P.T. Srinivasa Iyengar was responsible for the high status of the college. But the financial situation was unsatisfactory. Here providence played its benevolent hand and the fortunes of the college improved when in 1892 the famous and generous landlord Ankitam Vekata of Narsinga Row donated a handsome sum of 100,000 rupees, 11 acres of land and a huge building in addition to the building. a grant of Rs.15,000 in memory of his beloved wife. The college was thus known as Mrs. A.V.N. University since then.
